Childbirth Techniques

I'm reaching the point where this pregnancy seems very real. We're signing up for breastfeeding and childbirth classes, but I know the childbirth class will only touch upon things. I'm trying to research the different childbirth and pain management techniques so I can study up.

Right now, I'm really just looking for information on the different techniques so I can figure out which one I think would be right for me. Once I decide on a technique, I need to find a book, CD, or DVD to learn about the methods and how to apply them. Adam wants a book for the labor partner as well so he can help me through. All I know is it's overwhelming.

I'm open to suggestions from anyone out there. What technique did you use? How did you prepare? Do you recommend a specific book/CD/DVD set?

  1. I know I am from a different era, but I used "natural" childbirth, the Bradley method of natural childbirth, for both of my deliveries. I wouldn't change a thing if I had it to do again. This method focuses on the empowerment of trusting your body and instincts after a very complete preparation of both mother and birth coach. The birth coach plays a very important support role. My decision was to have no medications or drugs unless absolutely necessary. I wouldn't recommend this method without adequate preparation, meaning a series of classes attended by both mom and dad. Without preparation, it would be too scarey.

It was my general position that childbirth is a very natural process and women have been doing it for eons without intervention. For every dramatized scene played out on tv showing a traumatizing birth, there are millions of women who have gone through very rewarding and non-tramatic experiences. Every one of God's creatures that gives birth does so following their own innate instincts, with a very tiny percentage of complications.

If considering this method, I would look for a hospital delivery system that supports this method, and insist that the birthing staff support my decisions.

I'm not saying this is right for every mom, but I strongly encourage any new mother to really consider this method.
